Eye color is a complex physical trait influenced by the genetic contributions of both parents. Each child inherits approximately 50% of their eye color genetics from each parent, a process governed by the pairing of alleles—variants of a gene that affect the trait's expression.

There are three primary pairs of alleles that dictate eye color: brown, green, and blue. The brown allele exhibits dominance over both green and blue alleles, while the green allele is dominant over the blue. Consequently, blue is classified as a recessive allele.

The determination of a newborn's eye color is contingent upon the combination of alleles inherited from the parents and their respective dominance. A child may inherit two dominant alleles, one dominant and one recessive, or two recessive alleles from their parents.

• If a child receives one brown (dominant) allele from one parent and one blue (recessive) allele from the other, the resulting eye color will be brown.
• A pair of blue alleles from both parents will yield blue eyes in the child, as there are no dominant alleles present.
• Green eyes are produced if the child inherits either two green alleles or one green allele combined with one blue allele.

It is worth noting that many infants are born with blue eyes, primarily because melanin production takes time to develop following birth. This initial lack of pigmentation contributes to the prevalence of blue-eyed newborns.
